I’ve been thinking about this for a while and, having listened to a radio programme about a time in history when the world was much wamer than it is today, i’m convinced humans are facing a mass extinction in the near future. Let me explain further.
We keep hearing about global warming and are constantly encouraged to do what we can to recycle and cut down our use of energy and resources. At the same time the population of the world is increasing at an unsustainable rate and they all need feeding. Our Governement try their best to maintain the current way of life and improve it. Nonetheless, we drive round in cars, live in houses, have food delivered to our door from intensive farms packaged in plastic and fly round the world when we fancy.
This way of life is simply not sustainable; however, we’ve reached the stage where we’ve overtaken the point at which we can do anything about it apart from slow the inevitable crash down by a few years. At some point in the next hundred years we are going to have depleted many of the vital resources we need for our current way of life, we will no longer be able to feed the tens of billions of humans on the planet and parts of the planet will no longer be habitable.
Gradually over the next few decades the rule of Government will start to fail, there will be growing tension both on the streets and between countries. Conflicts will break out. Parts of the world that are already practically uninhabitable will cease to receive aid. Governments will be unable to support the poor, the unemployed and the elderley and medical services will start to collapse. Eventually, humankind will implode back in on itself until humans again only number a few million in the world.
The fauna and flora of the world will continue as it has done for millenia. Some animals and plants will adapt to the temporary increase in global temperature. Others, like tribes in the drought stricken areas of Sudan, will simply die out. Those humans that survive will do so not as cavemen or hunter gatherers, but as small scale self sufficient homesteaders, in groups or family units, unsupported and unhindered by Governement or the rule of law.
There is little we can do about it now apart from enjoy ourselves whilst we can, help our children out as much as possible and equip them with the skills and knowledge to survive.
