Soup of the Day – Wallpaper Paste

I’ve just come back from a lunchtime swim and have eaten what I think may have been a tin of chicken flavour wallpaper paste. That’s not of course what it said on the tin, it actually said cream of chicken soup. It’s from the ‘classics’ range and headlined as ‘soupreme’. Yes it’s from Aldi. My wife won two tins in a raffle somewhere and they’ve been in my draw with a tin of Heinz tomato soup for some time. Now the ingredients listed on any product are always in descending order of quantity. So on the Heinz tomato soup tin the first ingredient is tomatoes (84%). Quite acceptable. On the Aldi chicken soup tin the first ingredient is water. Oh..! The next ingredient, therefore the second most in quantity is chicken (3%) followed by cream (2%). Now I am beginning to see where the difference is and what is making it so thick if there’s so much water and so little chicken. The rest of the ingredients are just a big list of things I have never really heard of and include, xantham gum, guar gum, pentasodium triphosphate, chicken fat and modified maize starch. Now I’m no detective but I think I may have solved the mystery of the wallpaper paste texture. If I could obtain the recipe off Aldi I could get my eldest daughter to make some ‘classic’ chicken soup, she is after all studying chemistry at 6th form. Best stock up on chicken fat just in case.
