Rather unusually for August I had to lie in bed an extra hour before setting off this morning to wait for the mist and fog to lift a little. When I did get underway at 07.00 am I headed out of Dry Doddington through the lanes roughly in the direction of Lincoln. As I approached the outskirts it was such a lovely morning with the Cathedral still hazy through the morning mist that I decided to ride straight in to the centre and then out to the marina at Brayford Waterfront.
I was still feeling fairly fresh and resisited the temptation to call in to Greggs before heading out of town on the A57 towards Dunham Bridge. It had been my intention as I rode out of the City past the old race course to cross the River Trent at Dunham Bridge and make my way back towards Newark on the opposite bank; however, at Drinsey Nook I’d had enough of the traffic on the main road and cut back on to country lanes.
As I approached the Showground at Newark I spotted three cyclists touring with full panniers and camping gear ahead. I pulled alongside to ask where they were headed and were amazed to hear they were going to the European Juggling Convention at the Newark Showground…..yes you did read that correctly. Even more amazing was the fact that they’d ridden from Germany to attend.
