Every few weeks my son goes with his friends to watch the Nottingham Panthers. Last night one of his mates couldn’t make the game and the ticket had already been paid for so I went. Strangely enough I’ve never been to a game before so, thinking it would be freezing, I dressed ready for the Antarctic only to find it was really very warm in the arena and there was no need for two fleeces a jacket, gloves, scarf and hat. Doh.
Anyway, despite my reservations I really enjoyed it, unlike the football match I went along to with him last year when another of his friends couldn’t make it. I found the game fast paced and there seemed to be few rules. There was plenty of pushing and shoving, slamming in to the wall and the odd scuffle. Nobody really got hurt and there was no need for anyone to run on with a magic sponge, nobody took a dive or rolled around in agony on the floor after a little tap on the leg. They even sold beer at reasonable prices. I might go again.
Just to add a bit of drama to the evening we didn’t check what time the car park closed so when we returned to it after dining in the Scottish Restaurant (Macdonalds) it was closed. There followed a sheepish phone call to the good lady wife and a pick up in the only vehicle left on the drive, the camper van, an hour later. The bit I wasn’t so keen on was getting up at 0500 this morning to get the first train to Nottingham in order to get the car out of the car park as soon as it opened to avoid getting a ticket. As my son says, ‘you learn and live dad’………I didn’t have the heart to correct him.
